What’s really in your bathroom cabinet?
You’re shopping for a new moisturiser and you care about the substances
you put on your body, but when you turn the product over you’re faced with
a list of over 50 chemicals. Why so many? And why is the main one water?
There are over 10000 ingredients approved for use in personal care
products, and most products contain anywhere from 20 to 60 ingredients,
so an average woman who uses 12 products a day (including dental,
hair, body and face products) will apply over 500 different chemicals to
her body every day. Th at’s why it’s important to know if these ingredients
are actually good for you!
Deciphering an ingredient list is challenging. You’re juggling claims,
ingredients, symbols, buzzwords ... how are you meant to analyse it all?
It’s a minefield! I recently reverse-engineered a popular department store
moisturiser (it shall remain nameless) that sold for over $400 a jar, and was
gobsmacked by the inferior ingredients in the product—and the technology
used to create it had remained virtually unchanged for decades. Grrrr ...
My advice is to put the made-up marketing buzzwords, promises and the
whole gamut of persuasive language aside and check out exactly what’s in
the product through the ingredients list. Don’t be seduced by misleading
statements about the product containing a certain active ingredient that
will create a visible change in the skin—an active ingredient needs to be
at an effective dosage according to scientific data and testing to work.
Many companies put a whiff of an ingredient in so they can use it in their
marketing, when it needs to be at a much higher dosage to be effective.
Then there’s the terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ with claims of purity—when
only a few ingredients are actually organic! And while I’m on my soapbox,
what’s ‘natural’ anyway? This is the most overused term in skincare.
Almost every cosmetic ingredient needs to be purified or slightly modified
to be fit for adding to a skincare product, so it’s hardly ever exactly the
same as the ingredient that was originally picked from a tree. So is it still
really ‘natural’?
I know I sound like a cynic. I’m actually a glass-half-full kinda gal, but I’m
so over all the hype and misinformation...hence this book!
