There is a personal reason why I support the Melanoma Institute Australia.
Australia has one of the highest rates of Melanoma in the world and we need to be more educated to prevent ourselves from becoming victims of this deadly cancer.
A mole on your skin could pop up at any time and that is exactly what happened to me.
This is my story.
In 2008, 18 months after I arrived in Australia, a darkish mole appeared on the back of my upper arm. I really didn't think it was anything as I don't sunbathe and I am always wearing sunscreen to protect my skin. As the mole was on the back of my arm I realised that this is an awkward area where sunscreen application is often missed. I decided to get it checked by my local skin cancer clinic. The GP there scanned it and told me it was not malignant but I could have it removed if I want. I decided it was not necessary to get it removed.
A month later I read an article in Marie Claire magazine about a girl who had a mole in the same place as mine and it was a Melanoma. Unfortunately hers was detected too late and she passed away. Thanks to that article I began to worry that my mole was a melanoma.
I then decided to see my family GP. When the GP saw the mole she advised that it would probably be benign, however as I also had a skin tag under my eye which I wanted to have removed she gave me a dermatologist referral. It was Autumn and being a busy mum I saw no urgency to go to the dermatologist until November when I finally got around to it. The dermatologist took one look at my mole and immediately removed it! Thank goodness I did not ignore that referral.
Two days later I received the result that the mole was a Melanoma. I was completely shocked and very scared. Fortunately, it only reached the upper Dermis skin layer. If it descended by one layer to the Dermis, the cancer would have entered my bloodstream. The dermatologist also removed a large section of tissue around where the mole was located. Unsightly as the wound was, it was definitely better than having a Melanoma! Now I get checked by a dermatologist every 6 months.
I am one of the lucky ones who are here to share my unfortunate experience. Even though I was not a sunworshipper, I was silly in my late teens, when I would sit under a sunbed and I was not vigilant about using sunscreen, without realising the potential danger of this to my skin in later life.
I urge you to protect yourself and your children, especially when they are in their teens and are likely to ignore the dangers. Also please remember to get a checkup annually by a dermatologist.
