Exploring Exfoliation

Skin that is not exfoliated on a weekly basis can appear dry, dull and clogged.

I can always tell when a client has not exfoliated due to the roughness of the skin that can be felt during the cleansing process.  Exfoliation is important, however, some take it to the extreme and over exfoliate which creates a reactive and red skin.

Why exfoliate at all?

Exfoliating will remove excess dead skin cells to:

  • Brighten the skin
  • Allow for skincare products to penetrate and deliver properly rather than being trapped on the surface of the skin.
  • Prevent our skin from becoming congested and help to reduce blackheads.

During professional skin treatments, a therapist will perform an exfoliation to ensure the skin receives maximum benefits from the treatment.

Types of Exfoliators

There are 3 types of Exfoliators:

Mechanical exfoliators also known as scrubs which are used to loosen and reduce skin flakes that lie on the top layer of the skin.

Enzyme exfoliators which generally contain Pineapple (Bromelain) and/or Papaya (Papain) enzymes to gently dissolve excess skin while delivering antioxidants and softening the skin without too much friction. This only works on the top layer of the skin.

Chemical exfoliators which work deeper into the skin with the use of Hydroxy Acids such as Lactic, BHA’s and Retinol(Vitamin A). These can be very beneficial for those needing corrective treatment.

An exfoliating serum combined with a Retinol(Vitamin A) is highly recommended for night use. By combining a Vitamin A and chemical exfoliant you will benefit from dissolving the dead skin and increase the cell renewal process which will help rejuvenate your skin.
